About the Field Station

The mixed grass prairie ecosystem at Kessler Atmospheric and Ecological Field Station includes a diverse landscape with mixed and tall grass prairie, woodlands, riparian communities along Finn Creek, several ponds, protected habitats, research areas, and pastures. KAEFS is an example of the predominant land use in the southern Great Plains. It is not pristine prairie, but rather has a land use legacy that is common in this area. Thus, KAEFS provide an excellent example of human impact on southern plains ecosystems and provides research and educational opportunities to investigate and better understand dynamics of managed landscapes throughout North America.
