Like most of the ponds and lakes in Oklahoma, KAEFS ponds have found mercury contamination in the fish population. In a survey taken by the EPA, four large mouth bass were sampled from a KAEFS pond. These animals were shown to have very high mercury levels as shown below.
Normally, large fish have high mercury contents, as shown by this graph. However, the KAEFS fish were smaller and have contents of fish normally twice their size. The reason for this is unknown , and the precise source of the mercury in KAEFS ponds has not been identified. For further information on this issue, please see the following web site.
